It has physical benefits.Karnavedha-sanskar is performed before the Upanayana. It is done for the purpose of attaining complete femininity and masculinity in men and women. It is also a belief that the rays of the sun enter through the holes of the ears and make the boy and girl prosperous.
This sanskar is also a powerful medium according to the modern acupuncture method for the wearing of ornaments for girls and to prevent diseases. In our Shastras, a person without Karnavedh is not considered to be eligible for Shradh. There is a law for Brahmins and Vaishyas to do Karnavedha with silver needle, Shudra with iron needle and Kshatriya and rich men with gold needle.
